The College, established in 1973 by the Ohio General Assembly as the state medical school for northeast Ohio, has earned a national and international reputation for the quality of its graduates and its groundbreaking research projects. There are only 17 combined B.S./M.D. programs throughout the country. There is also direct entry into the medical program for students holding bachelor's degrees. Additionally, the college offers graduate programs in biomedical sciences and biomedical engineering through Kent State University and The University of Akron. Focused areas of research include Cardiovascular Medicine/Lipid Metabolism, Clinical Outcomes/Health Policy Infectious Diseased/Virology, Neuroscience/Behavioral Systems and Skeletal Biology/Bone Disease. Bohecker's College

Maplewood Career Center
"These programs are all affiliated with area colleges," she said. "The landscape horticulture program is affiliated with the Ohio State University Agricultural Technical Institute, and the other two programs are affiliated with Kent State University; for example, students spend a full two days on campus at Kent State with the program." The tech prep programs benefit Portage County businesses and industries directly, as students entering the workforce have the advantage of a longer period of study in their area of expertise, Bateman said. Examples of regular courses of study at Maplewood include studies in Auto Services, Business Management, Carpentry, Computerized Business, Electronics and Graphic Communications. "We offer apprenticeships in many areas and early placement for seniors; many of our students are employed right out of school," Bateman said. Maplewood Career Center offers a myriad of adult education courses as well. Many Portage County companies have had great success with these programs, Bateman said, from classes in Management and Leadership Training to specialized computer and Web development classes. "We are able to design any training program for a company," she said. "We then streamline that program to meet specific needs, and we can teach that course either onsite or at Maplewood." "When you look at Portage County, as far as the communities located here, there is a very wide pool of prospective employees in the county," Bateman said. "There is a lot of space available for development, a lot of enterprise zones, but most importantly, there is a workforce here."
Additionally, Northcoast Medical Training Academy
offers a unique program that prepares the student to work as a
Veterinary Assistant or Animal Caretaker in a health facility. |
