Portage Workforce Connection is a service of the Portage Workforce Committee,
the one-stop partners, the
Portage County Commissioners
in partnership with
the Geauga Ashtabula Portage Partnership (GAPP) - Workforce
Investment Board.
Portage
Workforce Connection (PWC) is a collaboration between community
agencies dedicated to providing information and services related
to employment, labor market, training, careers, community
services and business resources to job seekers, employers and
businesses in Portage County.
Our
mission includes:
 |
Help
individuals maximize employment opportunities. |
 |
Help
employers gain access to skilled workers. |
 |
Help
employers retain skilled workers. |
 |
Assist
with the development or enhancement of the skills of the
existing workforce. |
 |
Improve
the quality of the state's workforce and enhance the
productivity and competitiveness of the state's economy. |
We
are part of a national initiative to improve the coordination
and effectiveness of workforce development programs. One-stop
employment, training and community service delivery systems are
mandated by the Workforce Investment Act (WIA). Portage County
began building its one-stop system in 1998 in collaboration
with Geauga County agencies.
Effective July 1, 2004, Workforce Investment Act programs in
Portage, Geauga and Ashtabula counties will be overseen by the
Geauga Ashtabula Portage Partnership's Workforce Investment
Board. Which consists of representatives from the three counties
appointed by the county commissioners.
Locally, workforce programs will overseen by Local Workforce
Committees and implemented by the one-stop employment and
training centers in each county. In Portage County, the former
Workforce Policy Board is now the Portage Workforce Committee.
Services will continue to be provided by the Portage Workforce
Connection.
"It is important to note: This is an
organizational change. The delivery of employment, training and
community services will not be effected."
We will continue to use the existing system as a foundation to
improve the one-stop service delivery system to serve the
residents and employers in Portage County.
The
Portage Workforce Connection is built on principles, which
include:
 |
Universality.
One-Stop centers will serve all job seekers and employers,
offering a range of services based on individual need. |
 |
Customer
Choice. Job
seekers and employers may go to any One-Stop location.
The centers will be flexible and sensitive to customer
satisfaction. |
 |
Integration.
Services and programs now administered by federal, state
and local governments
will be integrated at the One-Stop centers. |
 |
Performance
Driven.
Centers will be judged by clearly measurable outcomes and
by success in meeting the expectations of their
customers.
|
In addition to Internet accessible computers, our resource
center provides additional job search and hiring tools such
as software tutorials, videos, labor market information and
resume assistance. Those
working in partnership to deliver an effective system of
employment, training, community and business services to Portage
County residents and businesses include:
Portage Workforce
Committee's business and local agencies volunteers.
Portage Workforce Connection staff and one-stop partners.
